DO-JO Rules,Etiquette and General Information
H.T.K.C aims to provide an enjoyable atmosphere to learn karate and to achieve this, rules must be followed.Learning karate is as much about Self Discipline, commitment and respect as it is about just doing the karate moves.
- Bow on entering and leaving the Dojo (Place of training). To those who practice Karate the Dojo is a sacred place. We bow on entering the dojo to affirm our intention to train hard and seriously, and bow on leaving to show our gratitude for the training and instruction we have received.
- Respect all members of the class.
- No smoking, drinking or eating, chewing gum etc. in the dojo.
- Keep your finger and toe nails short and clean to avoid injuring your training partner or damaging any training equipment used.
- No jewellery should be worn whilst training, if unavoidable should be taped up.
- Greet your fellow students quietly and don’t talk during instruction.
- When resting, always sit crossed legged or in the kneeling position (Seiza) around the edge of the dojo, never with your back resting against the wall, or in a slovenly manner.
- During training if a student has to leave the training session (feeling ill, to use the toilet, or has to leave before the end of the session) you must always ask the permission of the instructor or a senior grade
- Always wear a clean white gi (kit) – (unless you have just started tracksuit and t-shirt is ok)
- You must have an up to date licence.
BELT Grading Syllabus
At Hadleigh Traditional Karate Club students will be able to grade for their belts(once the instuctor feels they are ready). This takes place in front of a panel of Black Belts under the guidance of Les Birkin in the Colchester club. These gradings are held periodically throughout the year approx every 4 mths.
Important:All students start as a Red belt but as most suits come with a white belt this can be worn but does not mean the student is a white belt.Students will only be allowed to grade if they train regularly and have an upto date licence!Once the student takes their first grade and if successful they are then a white belt.Once a grading is achieved the grading examiner records the details in the licence book ( so keep it safe!!!).This is the record of a students karate level, its then down to them to purchase the correct belt colour as these are not given as part of grading.
The order of the belts is as follows:-
| Colour | Kyu |
|---|---|
| Red | Start |
| White | 8th Kyu |
| Yellow | 7TH Kyu |
| Orange | 6TH Kyu |
| Green | 5th Kyu |
| Purple | 4th Kyu |
| Brown | 3rd Kyu |
| Brown | 2nd Kyu |
| Brown and White | 1st Kyu |
